Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has revealed that only 5% of illegal firearms cases involving the 1,400+ weapons removed by Metro Police over three years resulted in convictions, with 80% of failures stemming from investigative shortcomings by national police. Hill-Lewis is pushing for Metro Police to be granted investigative powers—a proposal he insists isn’t about “municipal empire building” or “secessionism,” but about addressing the criminal justice system’s catastrophic failure rate. The mayor made these comments during a comprehensive interview with CDE executive director Ann Bernstein.
