Platforms Like ChatGPT Won't Replace Jobs, Will Be A Co-Worker: TCS

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) feels generative artificial intelligence platforms like ChatGPT will create an "AI co-worker" and not replace jobs. Milind Lakkad, the chief human resources officer (CHRO) of the country's largest IT services firm that employs over 6 lakh people said such tools will help improve productivity, but not change the business models for companies. "..it (generative AI) will be a co-worker. It will be a co-worker and that co-worker will take time for them to understand the context of the customer," Mr Lakkad said in an interview with PTI recently. The context for a job to be executed will be industry and customer-centric, which will continue to come from the human who is being assisted in tasks by such a co-worker, Lakkad explained. "It is not that jobs will get replaced, but the job definitions will change," he added in the comments which will assuage concerns about future of jobs in the sector which is one of the biggest

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday said that the government is taking a lot of steps to control inflation and will continue to focus on it. For instance, in the case of pulses, the government is encouraging farmers to grow pulses to boost domestic production and has also reduced the import duty on some of the pulses to improve local availability. When asked whether Budget 2023-24 would bring down inflation, Ms Sitharaman said: "The government is taking a lot of steps to control inflation and will continue to focus on it." She was in Jaipur for a post-budget 2023 discussion with various stakeholders. "We have taken a lot of steps, for example, encouraging farmers to sow pulses so that the production of pulses in India increases in the coming sowing season," Ms Sitharaman told reporters here. She further said that as a short-term step, "wherever we are importing, whether Masoor, Moong or whatever pulses, the government has reduced the impor

India's Ola Electric Mobility Pvt. plans to build what it says will be the world's largest electric vehicle hub with an investment of 76.1 billion rupees ($920 million) to localize the supply chain for cleaner transport. The hub, spanning 2,000 acres (809 hectares) in Tamil Nadu, will be used for manufacturing electric two-wheelers, cars and battery cells, in addition to housing vendor and supplier parks, Ola said in a statement Friday. The Indian startup will begin mass production of cells from the hub later this year, it said. While localizing critical elements of the EV supply chain, such as batteries, will make EVs more affordable, India has only a fraction of the raw materials needed to satisfy domestic demand for lithium-ion batteries - forecast by Crisil to grow 100- fold by 2030. Besides Ola, billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries Ltd. and bullion refiner Rajesh Exports Ltd. will receive incentives under a $2.3 billion government program to support advan

Vedanta Resources' efforts to manage its debt load were dealt a blow after the government opposed the mining conglomerate's proposed $2.98 billion deal to move certain zinc assets from its flagship company to another in which it is a majority shareholder. The government opposed Hindustan Zinc Ltd, in which it holds a near 30% stake, buying the Africa-based assets from Vedanta Ltd, its top shareholder with a near-65% stake, as it was a "related party transaction". "We always believe in and operate in perfect manners of corporate governance, so (there is) no deviation on that count," Hindustan Zinc Chief Executive Arun Misra told CNBC-TV18. The company and Vedanta Ltd did not respond to Reuters' request for comment. The development comes a week after Vedanta Resources said it had slashed net debt by $2 billion in the last 11 months, to $7.7 billion, seeking to allay concerns days S&P Global Ratings raised doubts about the billionaire Anil Agarwal-ow

India is likely to clock 6 per cent growth rate next fiscal and the country can persevere with a high growth rate because of several reforms undertaken during the last eight years by the Narendra Modi government, former Niti Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar said on Sunday. Rajiv Kumar further said major risks going forward will emerge from a synchronized downturn in the North American and European economies. "India has a good opportunity to persevere with a high growth rate because of the reforms undertaken during the last eight years. We will manage to grow at 6 per cent in 2023-24," he told PTI in an interview. According to Rajiv Kumar, there are several downside risks, especially in the context of an uncertain global situation. "These will have to be tackled through careful policy measures designed to support our export efforts and at the same time improve the flow of private investment both from domestic sources as well as from foreign sources," he said. Italian super-luxury carmaker Lamborghini has nearly met its target for the year 2023 in India in just first month. Speaking to Times of India , Lamborghini's Asia-Pacific director Francesco Scardaoni said they are "already sold out for the year". The company, which sells a range of cars with prices starting from Rs 3.8 crore in India, posted record sales in India in 2022 at 92 units, growing at 33 per cent from the previous year. Its previous best-ever sales in the country was in 2021 with 69 units. Before that, its best sales was in 2019 when it had sold a total of 52 units. The company hopes to retail over 100 cars in India, and most of them have already been ordered. Mr Scardaoni said the growth in sales is led by businessmen and ultra-high networth individuals (UHINs) as the impact of Covid wanes globally. "Looks like whatever we do sells pretty good," Lamborghini's top executive told TOI when asked it's proving to be a "golden period"

The merger of 7 subsidiary companies with Tata Steel is expected to be completed in 2023-24 fiscal year, its CEO and managing director T V Narendran said. "We had already announced (merger of) 6 companies earlier. (Merger of) one more Angul Energy we announced recently," he told PTI in reply to a question on the timeline for the merger. New Tax Regime To Benefit Middle Class, Says Finance Minister

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today said the new tax regime will benefit the middle class, as it will leave more money in their hands. Speaking to reporters after the customary post-Budget address to the central board of RBI, she said it is not necessary to induce individuals to invest through government schemes but give him an opportunity to make a personal decision regarding investments. Under the revamped concessional tax regime, which will be effective from the next fiscal, no tax would be levied on income up to Rs 3 lakh. Income between Rs 3-6 lakh would be taxed at 5 per cent; Rs 6-9 lakh at 10 per cent, Rs 9-12 lakh at 15 per cent, Rs 12-15 lakh at 20 per cent and income of Rs 15 lakh and above will be taxed at 30 per cent. However, no tax would be levied on annual income of up to Rs 7 lakh. Answering a question on the Adani Group row, the minister said, "Indian regulators are very, very experienced and they are experts in their domain. The regulators are seized o

For every rupee that the Government of India earns, 34 paise comes through borrowings and liabilities while Goods and Services Tax (GST) contributes 17 paise, the 2023 Union Budget reveals. Income tax and corporation tax add 15 paise each to every one rupee the Centre earns each year, while Union Excise Duty and Customs add seven and four paise respectively. The remaining eight paise comes from non-tax receipts and non-debt capital receipts. As per Union Budget 2023, the outstanding internal and external debt, and other liabilities of the Centre are estimated at ₹1,69,46,666.85 crore for FY 2023-24. On the other hand, GST is estimated to rise by 12 per cent from ₹8,54,000 crore to ₹9,56,600 crore in 2023-24. Income tax, which is paid by just a small fraction of India's population, is expected to cross ₹9 lakh crore in 2023-24. Corporation tax, which is the tax levied on companies' incomes, is expected to be at ₹9,22,675 crore by March 2024. These two taxes along with th

The central government is likely to increase dearness allowance (DA) for its over one crore employees and pensioners by four percentage points to 42 per cent from existing 38 per cent as per the agreed formula for the purpose. The dearness allowance for employees and pensioners are worked out on the basis of the latest Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) brought out by the Labour Bureau every month. The Labour Bureau is a wing of the Labour Ministry. Talking to PTI, All India Railwaymen Federation, General Secretary, Shiva Gopal Mishra said, "The CPI-IW for December 2022 was released on January 31, 2023. The dearness allowance hike works out to be 4.23 per cent. But the government does not factor in hiking DA beyond decimal point. Thus DA is likely to be increased by four percentage points to 42 per cent."
